Totality on the Nile

On 2 August 2027, the longest total solar eclipse on land this century sweeps across Egypt. This programme lets you experience it from one fixed, comfortable base in Minya, right on the Nile in Middle Egypt — no early starts, no last-minute repositioning, no convoy of buses on eclipse morning. You wake up on the river, have a relaxed breakfast and step outside as the sky goes dark around midday.

Why Minya?

Further south, around Luxor, totality lasts about two minutes longer — but Luxor is also where most of the world's eclipse travellers will gather, with full hotels, busy roads and crowded viewing spots. In Minya you trade those extra minutes for space, calm and a much shorter journey from Cairo.

And four minutes of totality is still a remarkable gift: longer than the vast majority of total solar eclipses ever offer anywhere on Earth, and more than enough time to watch the corona unfold, look for the planets, see the 360° sunset glow on the horizon and simply take it all in — without rushing and without a crowd in front of you.

Eclipse Times in Minya

In Minya, the partial eclipse begins at 11:33 local time. Totality starts at 12:55 and lasts 4 minutes and 4 seconds, with maximum eclipse at 12:57. The partial phase ends at 14:19.

What This Trip Is (and Isn't)

This is not a fully guided tour with a packed sightseeing schedule. It's designed for eclipse travellers who want a comfortable, well-organised framework combined with plenty of freedom and time for themselves. Our Dabuka representative is with the group throughout the Minya stay for transfers, practical support and questions. Eclipse day itself is deliberately left open — watch from the hotel, walk down to the river, or simply relax by the Nile.

Beyond the Eclipse: Optional Excursions

Minya has much more to offer than the eclipse. After Luxor, the region is home to one of the largest concentrations of ancient sites in Egypt — yet it sees only a fraction of the visitors.

On request, we arrange optional excursions: to Tell el-Amarna, the short-lived capital of Akhenaten and Nefertiti with the rock-cut tombs of their nobles; to Beni Hassan, where Middle Kingdom tombs high above the Nile are painted with scenes of daily life, hunting, dancing and the famous wrestlers; or to Tuna el-Gebel and Hermopolis, with the beautifully decorated tomb of Petosiris, the catacombs of the sacred ibis and baboon, and the colossal baboon statues of Thoth. Excursions are not included in the tour price — just let us know what interests you and we will send you details and prices.

Your Hotel on the Nile

Your base for three nights is the MG Nefertiti Hotel Minya, directly on the Nile. You can watch the eclipse from the hotel itself or take a short walk down to the river.
